Let’s clear something up right off the bat here… It is pronounced AH-SIGH-E. (see what I did there in the title??…Okay.. I am not very funny, but A for effort, right?) I am just as guilty as everyone else of trying to sound out the word.. and looking really dumb in the process.
Now that we can actually pronounce the name of the topic today, let’s dive in!
My brother-in-law, Tyler, has drank acai berry juice everyday since I have known him. My sister, Laura, (whose birthday it was yesterday by the way! Happy 24th, big sister!) and I were talking about it the other day and we both knew it was a powerful antioxidant, but didn’t know much else on the topic of it or why on earth Tyler drinks odd juice everyday….. I figured a lot of other people must be in the same boat as us. And so, enter this post! ( d’awww look at the happy couple.)
The acai berry comes from a type of palm tree that is found in Central and South America. The Brazilians were the first to discover the powerful benefits of these little dark purple berries. Mainly, they found that it boosted their energy and also possessed healing properties.
Most research has focused on the antioxidant properties of the berry with anthocyanin and flavanoids being driving forces. So, what do antioxidants do? Well, a lot.
Free Radicals are an atom/molecule with an unpaired electron in the outer shell. To gain that additional electron free-radicals will rob other cells of one. This can plant a seed for diseases (such as heart disease and different types of cancers), ageing, and DNA damage. So, of course we want to protect against them and the acai berry can help by neutralizing the free radicals.
This particular super fruit has been deemed the “Beauty Berry” because of how it can slow the aging process and also, because of it’s protein and omega 3, 6 AND 9 fatty acid content, can help improve the look and texture of hair, skin and nails.
That is a pretty powerful berry, right?
What about weight loss? There are no studies proving that Acai juice will aid in weight loss! So be careful with that one, there has been some buzz going around about it.
I can now see why Tyler drinks this stuff. Of course it is not the only way to include antioxidants into your daily diet, but it is a good option. Just be careful about buying juices that are LOADED with sugar! If you are going to give it a try be sure you are buying pure acai juice! As always…read the label!
